No Peace Deal Against People’s will, Pledges Ghani

KABUL - At meetings with representatives of different ethnic groups in Herat City on Thursday evening, the president called peace a divine command that was a necessity for the country’s even-handed development and prosperity.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said Western Zone Ulema Council head Maulvi Kuda Dad, Provincial Council Chairman Kamran Alizai, Syed Abdur Rahim and Hujatus Salam Mohammad Jawad Rajabzada spoke on behalf of the delegates.
They shared their views with Ghani on the peace process, recent parliamentary elections and the need for development and reforms. They thanked the president for inaugurating the Lapis Lazuli route.
While presenting public demands to the president, they also welcomed the launch of work on the ring road. They called for joint efforts to restore peace in the country and avoid disunity among the people.
“I’m proud of the Afghan government leading and owning the peace and reconciliation drive. Based on national consensus, the unity government remains committed to peace. Our roadmap to peace has been carted by religious scholars.”
He went on to assure women: “I assure you that no one will be allowed to compromise your rights in the name of peace. A government negotiating team has already been constituted for talks.”
The presidential vote would be conducted on schedule next year, he said, stressing the incoming government must be capable of discharging its duties in an efficient manner.
All possible efforts would be made to hold the elections transparently, the president pledged, saying all government institutions were responsible for respecting voters’ mandate. (Pajhwok)
