Conference of  Clerics on Afghanistan  Begins in Jeddah

RIYADH - An international conference on peace efforts in Afghanistan kicked off in the Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
Religious scholars attending the two-day event are expected to ask the Taliban to join the peace process and recognise the democratically elected Afghan government.
Around 110 religious scholars from over 36 Muslim countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Sudan and Tunisia, are participating in the conference.
A Pajhwok reporter in Jeddah said the event was opened by the Saudi minister of hajj and religious affairs.
OIC Secretary-General Dr. Yousef, Afghanistan Ulema Council chief Qayyamuddin Kashaaf and Imam of Mecca Abdullah Saleh would deliver speeches.
The participants would later discuss the Afghanistan peace process. They are likely to drum up support for the reconciliation process. (Pajhwok)
