Ghani, Pence Talk Eid Ceasefire & Parliamentary Elections

KABUL/WASHINGTON - US Vice-President Mike Pence and President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday discussed the security situation in Afghanistan, including the Eid ceasefire.
Pence spoke with Ghani over the telephone and renewed the international commitment to partner with and support the Afghan government and security forces.
A statement from the White House said Pence reiterated President Trump’s South Asia strategy, which calls for a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan.
He commended Ghani’s efforts to make progress on reconciliation front.  The two leaders also discussed the importance of holding democratic elections and political inclusion for the long-term stability of the government.
Meanwhile, President Ghani tweeted: “We discussed the overall peace process, elections, counter-terrorism and reforms within Afghan security forces.
“I spoke with Pence this evening. The vice-president commended the Afghan government's resolve to work for peace and congratulated the Afghan forces on successful overseeing of ceasefire during Eid.” (Pajhwok)
