TIRINKOT - The governor of central Uruzgan province claims security forces have beaten back a string of recent Taliban attack.
Asadullah Saeed made the remarks weeks after the insurgents launched assaults on KhasUruzgan and Chora districts. Casualties were inflicted on a number of security forces.
He said the attacks led by Mullah Yaqub, son of former Taliban supremo Mullah Omar, were aimed to capture the districts before reaching Tirinkot.
Saeed added the militants tried to seize Uruzgan province because of its strategic location. From Uruzgan, he argued, the rebels could easily launch attacks on other province.
The guerrillas had suffered huge casualties, including notorious commanders, the governor continued. He criticised the central government for not paying due attention to Uruzgan.
During his recent trip to Kabul, he shared security concerns with President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Dr. Abdullah. They promised him the province would be stabilised.
Saeed once again called on Taliban to renounce war and join the reconciliation process. The group has not yet reacted to the governor’s remarks. (Pajhwok)
