Corruption Main Factor behind Afghan Conflict: Spoko

KABUL - Spoko was addressing the fourth Annual Anti-Corruption Conference of European Union (EU) in Kabul on Tuesday. President Ashraf Ghani and other high ranking officials also addressed the conference.
Addressing the conference, President Ashraf Ghani said a lot of efforts had been made by the Unity Government to eradicate corruption, but the menace remained a challenge.
“People ask us where the billions of dollars disappeared; we should have a clear mechanism regarding the fight against corruption.”
The president said more work had been done in the security sector, its budget cleared of corruption and transparency brought to contracts, but still more was needed to be done to do away with corruption.
Ghani termed the National Unity Government’s (NUG) tenure “a period of change and development” and added the major works included the creation of National Anti-Corruption Strategy.
Spoko in address said corruption was the factor behind the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan because the menace threatened the ongoing fight and chances for the victory in the war against terrorism.
Institutions working against corruption should act independently and their viewpoints should be heard, he added.
EU Ambassador for Afghanistan Pierre Mayaudon said Afghanistan had come to an important crossroad and elections this year and next year were highly important for the future of the people.

He said participation in elections was crucial and meant discharging his/her responsibility. (Pajhwok)
