Construction Work on Balkh-Herat Railroad to Continue

KABUL - Transport Minister Mohammad Hamid Tahmasi has held talks on enhanced cooperation with representatives from Uzbekistan’s leading firms.
The Ministry of Foreign Trade hosted the meeting involving leaders of joint-stock companies Uzavtotrans, O`rtaOsiyo Trans, Uztrade and Uzasanoateksport.
A statement from the ministry said cooperation in trade, economic, transport and communication spheres came up for discussion at the meeting.
In particular, the timely implementation of contracts and other measures aimed at boosting trade turnover to $1 billion in coming years was stressed.
Participants discussed implementation of agreements reached during the state visit of President Ashraf Ghani to Uzbekistan in December 2017.
The two sides agreed on equipping the Termez Cargo Centre with sorting and packing lines for processing and exporting fruit and vegetable products of Afghan enterprises to third countries.
They also agreed on continuing construction work on the railway line between Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat. The need for preparing a feasibility study for the project for attracting further financing was noted.
Agreements were also reached on using the new Tashkent-Andijan-Osh-Kashgar automobile corridor for transporting Afghan products from Mazar-i-Sharif to Kashgar through Uzbekistan, maintenance and repair of Afghan aircraft on the Uzbekistan Airways Technics, as well as participation in training of highly qualified specialists in the field of aviation.
