KABUL - The mastermind behind former President Burhanuddin Rabbani's assassination was detained and some documents were recovered from him, the spy service announced on Saturday.
The ex-chairman of the High Peace Council was killed on Sept. 20 as a result of a suicide attack at his house in the high-security Wazir Akbar Khan diplomatic district of Kabul.
Addressing a press conference, National Directorate of Security ('NDS) spokesman Lotfullah Mashal said that the man had been detained with important documents by a joint commission made by President Hamid Karzai.

Members from National Security Council, defense and interior ministries and NDS were part of the commission, he said. The documents included videos, photos and audio tapes, which were handed over to Pakistan embassy in Kabul.

The documents show Rabbani's assassination was planned in the Satellite Town neighborhood of Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province.

Although the NDS spokesman did not disclose the detainee's name, the government's media centre said last week a key suspect, Hamidullah, had been arrested in connection with the murder.

The NDS had handed the documents to the Pakistan embassy, Mashal said, asking the neighboring country to take steps against Rabbani's assassins on the basis of the evidence.

"If Pakistan does not take concrete measures, Afghanistan will decide what to do next," he said, without elaborating. "This is concrete evidence that nobody can ignore," the spokesman added.
According to Mashal, the documents include the address, photographs and a layout of the house where the assassination plot was hatched.
