FAIZABAD - Shorabak dam will generate 7.2 megawatts of power and will benefit more than 7,000 families in Badakhshan.
A Turkish company will resume work on a key dam project in Badakhshan province, in the north east of Afghanistan, local officials said.
Work on the dam was stopped due to financial issues between the company and the Afghan government, but the problem has for now been resolved, Badakhshan governor Ahmad Faisal Begzad said.
The dam will be built on Kokcha River on the outskirts of Faizabad City. 
The governor said the project, which started 15 years ago, will be completed within three years and will generate 7.2 megawatts of power.
“The financial problems of the project were resolved due to the attention of the National Unity Government leaders. Work on the project will be resumed in the near future,” Begzad said.
Some officials from Badakhshan welcomed the move and said no further delay should be brought to the project.
“People want the dam project to be implemented and completed. They want to be benefited from the project in the near future,” said Abdullah NajiNazari, member of Badakhshan Provincial Council.
“The (contractor) company’s officials held talks with people. They asked the people to put pressure on the company in order to resume the project as soon as possible,” said Mohammad Zaman, head of the third district of Faizabad City.
Funded by Germany, the dam project will cost $48 million USD and will provide power to more than 7,000 families in Badakhshan. (Tolo news)
