Troops Gearing up for Major Offensive in the North

MAZAR-I-SHARIF - Preparations for a counterinsurgency offensive have been made and the fighters would not be given the allowed to fuel insecurity in any part of country, a military official said on Tuesday.
Maj. Gen. JavedSaleem, operational head of commandos for northern Afghanistan, told Pajhwok Afghan News around 500 local and foreign Daesh fighters were active in Jawzjan province.
Qari Hekmatullah, a drug trafficker and weapons smuggler heading the insurgents, had created a rebel group in the name of Daesh in the north, he revealed. But the group could not gain ground or execute major attacks.
Saleem said the strength of ground troops and air force personnel had doubled in northeastern Afghanistan. The number of fighter jets risen from four to 10, he added.
“We are stronger now than in the past, equipped with modern tools and latest weapons. All systems have been upgraded and things computerised. We track the location of our vehicles and personnel.
“If a wounded person is in need of help, we simply push a button to inform other forces in the area and ask them to help out the injured," the
Saleem asserted the commando forces were fully prepared and better-positioned to vanquish the enemy in the coming solar year.(Pajhwok)
