WASHINGTON - The United States is working to designate the Haqqani network as a "terrorist organization", a State Department official said on Tuesday. A sizeable number of the Haqqani kingpins had been individually designated as terrorists, but US officials were considering the issue with regard to the whole organization, State Department spokesperson, Victoria Nuland, told reporters at her daily news conference.

She said the State Department had carried out a number of Executive Order 13224 designations that targeted essentially the bigshots of the Haqqani group – financiers, leadership, as well as some of its most dangerous operatives.

The Pentagon had provided to Pakistan "indication of its complicity" with this extremist group, she added.

In 2008, the US targeted Sirajuddin Haqqani, in 2011, Badruddin Haqqani, Sangeen Zadran in 2011, and on the Treasury side, Nasiruddin Haqqani was designated in 2010, Khalil Haqqani in 2011, Ahmed Jan Zadran in 2011, as well as Fazl Rabi in 2011.

The White House, meanwhile, reiterated its call for Pakistan to take action against the outfit, which it blamed for the attack on the US embassy in Kabul.

"I think we've been very clear about our views on this. One, that the network was responsible for multiple attacks in Afghanistan, in particular the recent raids in Kabul, as well as some others, and that the Pakistani government needs to take action to deal with the links that exist there," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said.

"Over the course of the last few years, we have shared with the Pakistani leaders the indications that we have about this short of complicity (with extremist organizations in the region including the Haqqanis," Captain John Kirby, spokesperson for Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Pentagon reporters during an off-camera briefing.
