The Indonesian president has suggested the formation of a three-nation committee of religious scholars to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan.
Currently on an official visit to Islamabad, JokoWidodo floated the proposal at a meeting with his Pakistani counterpart MamnoonHussain in Islamabad on Friday night.
He said Islamic scholars from Indonesia, Afghanistan and Pakistan could promote a peaceful settlement of the conflict -- a proposal endorsed by President Hussain.
Peace in Afghanistan was necessary for regional development and progress, President Hussain said, believing Indonesia could play a positive role in the Afghan peace process.
Widodo also addressed a joint sitting of the Pakistani parliament, calling for political stability and security to ensure regional economic progress.
He stressed a negotiated end to armed conflicts that took a heavy toll on women and children and stymied economic stability and prosperity in the region. (Pajhwok)
