Land Grabbing Still a Major Challenge for Govt.

KABUL - Abdul Basir Anwar, Minister of Justice, who presented a three-year report of his activities on Saturday, said land grabbing by powerful figures is still a major challenge for government.
The minister meanwhile said inroads into resolving this problem had been made by the ministry and so far 7,200 hectares of state-owned land has been prevented from being usurped.
“During the three years of the National Unity Government, we have prevented (people) from grabbing of 7,200 hectares of state-owned land and we have defended numerous claims,” Anwar told a press briefing on Saturday.
He added: “We have saved land and property worth over $609 million USD, more than 2.4 billion AFs ... during this period.”
Meanwhile, officials from the Law Enforcement Institute of Afghanistan spoke out about improving rule of law, saying that the property registration law will help overcome endemic corruption in public offices.
“We can prevent and investigate many cases by implementing the law on registration of properties because it has a main role in overcoming corruption,” said Ashraf Khan Azimi, deputy head of the institute.
MPs also said land grabbing was a major challenge in the country.
“The senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and parliament leadership will meet each other in Pul-e-Charkhi Prison if the truth comes out,” said Ramazan Bashardost, an MP from Kabul. (Tolonews)
