Ghani Visits Paktia after Last Week’s Deadly Attack on Police HQ

KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday visited eastern Paktia province after last week’s deadly attack on police headquarters that killed about 80 people including 59 Afghan security force members and provincial police chief Torialai Abdyani.
The Presidential Palace said in a statement on Sunday that Ghani will visit Paktia to “share his condolences with the families of victims of last week’s attack.”
However, the statement did not provide further details.
Over 200 others including security forces were wounded in the attack which was carried out by Taliban insurgents on Tuesday.
The attack caused severe damage to the police training center as well as to the Paktia University and its hostel.
The provincial office of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries said the attack has also resulted in at least $1 million USD in losses to local businessmen.
This comes after a fact-finding team visited the police headquarters and said a new building would have to be built.
Last week’s delegation led by Urban Development Minister Sayed Sadat Naderi will submit their report to the president this week.
“We are ready to construct – a new building – for the police headquarters wherever you (Paktia elders and officials) will choose. We are serious in this respect and we will work in consultation with the Paktia governor,” Naderi said at a meeting with Paktia officials on Friday.  (Tolonews)
