KABUL - The Wolesi Jirga or lower house speaker urged political parties and influential figures to reach a consensus on resolving the current imbroglio, which he said the government could not deal with alone.
Jaffar Mehdavi, a lawmaker from Kabul said, that ‘a specific group’ wanted control of the security sector for moving the country in another direction.
He claimed some of the newly-appointed officials in the security organs had been involved in supporting Taliban and Daesh militants in some parts of the country. However, Mehdavi stopped short of going into details.
“It is unclear as to which direction we are heading to. The nation has expectations from us, the president and the national security advisor should be called to the Wolesi Jirga, then at least people would not criticize us,” he said.
Lawmaker Munawar Shah Bahaduri from western Herat province suggested holding an extraordinary meeting with the president.
“We have to discharge our responsibility towards our people. For how long the war and violence in our country should continue and we lose lives,” he said.
Speaker Abdur Rauf Ibrahimi, said: “If we want an end to the ongoing violence, then all political parties, influential figures and the parliament should develop a consensus in cooperation with the government.”
He said political parties and politicians should hold a joint meeting and find solution to problems in Afghanistan.
“Because the government alone cannot deal with the so many challenges from the war to joblessness, corruption, internal differences and foreign interferences,” he added. (Pajhwok)
