ISLAMABAD - Officials of the International Islamic University in Islamabad (IIUI) say the twin scourge of terrorism and extremism has no link to Islam, a religion that sets great store by peace and brotherhood.
During a meeting with a delegation of Afghan journalists currently visiting Pakistan, IIUI President Prof. Dr. Ahmed Yousif Ahmed Al Draiweesh said terrorism had no religion. In addition to Afghanistan and Pakistan, terrorist attacks were happening in Saudi Arabia too, he added.
Draiweesh, hailed from Saudi Arabia, is currently heading the IIUI. He called terrorist activities were against the teachings of Islam. “We want students of IIUI to be moderate and play a proactive role in bringing the Muslim countries closer,” he said.
A renowned academic, he said after most of the IIUI students were Pakistani and Afghan nationals, studying different disciplines.
Deputy President Dr. Masoom Yasinzai said students from over 42 countries were studying at the university, which was established in 1982. Islam is a religion of peace and brotherhood and rejects terrorism and extremism, according to the scholar.
Faridullah Zazai, head of the Afghan Students Union (ASU), said 700 Afghans, including 100 females, were studying in different faculties at the university. He demanded their issues related to hostel allotments, delays in scholarship award and visas be resolved.
He also demanded opportunities for master and PhD-level studies for Afghan students at the university. Zazai thanked IIUI officials for facilitating Afghan students. (Pajhwok)
