Tillerson Signals Support for Settlement with Taliban

KABUL - The Trump administration on Friday affirmed its commitment to the development of Afghan security forces’ capacity to contribute to regional stability and ward off terrorist threats.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, speaking to reporters in Brussels, described NATO’s new training mission in Afghanistan as critical.
The US remained committed to the Resolute Support Mission and supporting for Afghan forces, he said, calling the ongoing training programme essential to ensuring that Afghanistan defeated terrorist threats, including Al-Qaeda and ISIS.
“The ongoing commitment of NATO allies and partners to peace in Afghanistan, including to an eventual settlement between the Afghan government and the Taliban, protects this alliance’s interests,” he said.
If the plans come to fruition, they would ensure that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists, according to the secretary pf state, who urged NATO allies to boost defence spending or come up with plans to reach the alliance's budget guidelines within two months. (Pajhwok)
