KABUL - A new round of regional consultations on peace and stability in Afghanistan would take place in Moscow on April 14, the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman says.
Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow on Thursday the talks, in which Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Iran are expected take part, would focus on security in Afghanistan.
She said the main objective was to develop a single regional approach to further promoting the national reconciliation process in Afghanistan while maintaining Kabul's leading role.
The spokesperson renewed support for a peace process complying with earlier reviewed and approved principles on the integration of the armed opposition into a peaceful life.
Invitations have already been extended to Afghanistan, Central Asian countries, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and the United States, according to a statement from the Russian Embassy in Kabul.
Most of the countries have already confirmed their participation with some of Central Asian states expected to provide a response soon. Their participation is viewed important.
“We regret Washington's refusal to take part in the consultations. The US is an important player in the Afghan settlement, so it joining the peacekeeping efforts of the countries of the region would help reinforce the message to the Afghan regarding the need to stop armed resistance and to start talks.” (Pajhwok)
