KABUL - A group of former Taliban leaders have travelled to Saudi Arabia to discuss the Afghan peace process, a reliable source said on Thursday.
The Taliban delegation who visited Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, on an informal trip included Taliban Deputy Foreign Minister Abdul Rahman Zahid, Deputy Minister for Information and Cultural Affairs Abdul Rahman Hotak, Shkih Ahmad Rabani, brother of Taliban Deputy Head Mullah Rabani, Maulvi Muslim Haqani, Mullah Nasrullah Shikh Mahmood, Shaikh Abdul Rashid and some others.
Closed source to the delegation, said the Taliban former leaders had been invited by the Saudi King and former Imam of Macca Shaikh Al Sudais.
The source revealed the Taliban delegation would discuss the issues faced by Muslim ummah and Afghan peace process during the visit.
Abdul Rahman Niazy, spokesman of the Taliban splinter group, confirmed to Pajhwok in a telephonic conversation the visit of former Taliban leaders to Saudi Arabia.
“I spoke today to some individuals who travelled to Saudi Arabia. They went there to offer Umrah but there is the possibility of their meeting with Saudi officials,” said Niazi.
