US, Pakistan Back Afghan- Led Reconciliation Drive

PESHAWAR - Top American and Pakistani military commanders have reaffirmed their support for an Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process,

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and US Central Command chief General Joseph Votel pledged support for Afghan peace efforts at a meeting in Rawalpindi.

"Blame games are detrimental to enduring peace," said Bajwa while referring to anti-Pakistan rhetoric after recent terrorists attacks in Afghanistan.

According to the Pakistani army’s media wing, Gen. Bajwa said Pakistan had conducted operations against terrorists of all "hue and colour" and there were no safe havens in Pakistan that were used against Afghanistan.

The army chief reiterated his commitment to fully cooperating with the US-led Resolute Support Mission in the neighbouring country. He also stressed the need for border security and intelligence-sharing mechanisms with Afghanistan.

During Monday’s meeting at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, Gen. Votel commended Pakistan's efforts and sacrifices in the war against terrorism.

He also highlighted the importance Pakistan accorded to its relations with the US, particularly cooperation on counter-terrorism and regional stability.

A day earlier, Gen. Bajwa had telephoned President Ashraf Ghani and suggested installation of a "robust border management mechanism and intelligence cooperation" to restrict the movement of terrorists. (Pajhwok)
