KABUL – President Ghani on Monday said in a meeting held to support human rights defenders in Kabul that no one is above the law and that the law will be implemented against every one regardless of their position.
“First implement the law against me and then on other Afghans. Implementation of the law is what people expect and no one is above the law,” he said.
Ghani did not however mention the Dostum-Eshchi issue, but said there are challenges in the country and that only rule of law can ensure justice.
“People should believe and be assured that no one will violate their rights,” Ghani added.
Franz-Michael Mellbin, European Union (EU) ambassador to Afghanistan, also said some high-ranking officials of the Afghan government misuse their authorities and power.
“We still have a situation where many people in government abuse their power and their position to threaten people who speak up on human rights violations. And we have a week justice system and legal system institutions are in a very bad shape to actually effectively defend human rights defenders,” he said.
Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) meanwhile urged Ghani to support human rights defenders in the country.
“Unfortunately some officials of the Afghan government misuse their authorities and violate the law,” said Sima Samar, head of AIHRC.
Representatives of international organizations supporting human rights defenders in Afghanistan also said they support the Afghan government in stopping human rights violations. (Tolonews)
