KABUL - Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) says the implementation of the 1325 program has also slowed down due to a lack of funds.
Khairat Kampelman, director of Oxfam in Afghanistan, on Sunday said not enough women have been employed in security and justice departments and that this year’s program, the 1325 National Plan of Action, has faced numerous challenges.
Oxfam’s 1325 program was designed last year to increase women’s involvement in issues related to peace and security.
But according to Kampelman, the program has faced numerous challenges – especially in terms of reaching women in remote areas.
Minister of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) says the implementation of the 1325 program has also slowed down due to a lack of funds.
Sima Samar, head of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) meanwhile said women have not been given a substantial enough role in the peace process and stressed that women need to play a bigger part in the decision-making process.
“We should try to bring sustainable and justice-based peace to the country. Short-term political agreement cannot bring peace to the country,” she said.
Reports indicate that two percent of the police force is made up of women and only 0.7 percent of army personnel are female.
There are 187 women judges and out of 2,897 attorneys, 677 of them are women.
The first lady of the country, Rula Ghani however said government has made good progress in helping women lead better lives and that 75 woman are employed in peace councils in the provinces.
“Afghanistan is trying to implement the 1325 program. We are trying to bring positive changes in the country,” she said. (Tolonews)
