KABUL - Independent Election Commission (IEC) members on Sunday elected Najibullah Ahmadzai as the new head, Wasima Badghisi as operational deputy and Abdul Qadir Qurashi as administrative deputy of the commission.
Gulajan Abdul Badi Sayad was elected as secretary and spokesman of the IEC.
Addressing an event on this occasion, the Second Vice President Mohammad Sarwar Danish called on the election commissions to maintain their impartiality and work transparently and justly.
"Transparency is ensured when the executive and administrative offices of the election commissions are trust worthy, responsible, and honest towards the national interests," he said.
"Monitoring and assessing complaints and criticism is more important than elections. I can say that the place of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission [IECC) is important and effective than the IEC," he added.
The commissioners meanwhile said they would tackle current problems within the commissions.
"The current problems should be addressed whether they are technical, structural or budget issues," said Maliha Hassan, an election commissioner.
"We urge the international community to financially support the new institution and the draft that we will prepare for the IECC," said Humaira Haqmal, member of the IECC. (Tolonews)
