KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani on Monday asked the United Nations Security Council to include names of all terrorists, including the current Taliban supreme leader, Mullah Haibatullah, in its sanctions list.
A statement from the Presidential Palace said the president told a UN’s sanctions delegation that the world’s body should consider terrorism a long-term threat.
The president stressed continued war on terrorism and said: “We want all terrorists and the current Taliban leader Mullah Haibatullah’s names to be added to the UNSC list.”
The president asked the UN delegation to establish a coordinated mechanism for further discussing the issue “We want a long lasting peace in Afghanistan and for this reason we are ready with an obvious strategy.”
Ghani said the war in Afghanistan was not internal but had different dimensions. “There are 30 terrorist groups in Afghanistan and the region which is a threat to the world and needs a mid-term plan and strategy to fight the phenomenon.”
He said a clear stance should be taken against countries that helped terrorists by giving them safe-havens and equipment. He said other issues like how the black money was turned white and then reached terrorists also needed to be worked upon.
He said one of the biggest sources that financed terrorists was narcotics and the second one illegal excavation of mines. But the unity government had suspended new contracts given over the past two years in order develop management capacity.
Gerard van Bohemen, UN sanctions’ delegation head, said: “We would consider the president’s views regarding adding terrorists, including Mullah Haibatullah, names to the UN’s Security Council sanctions list.”
“We are ready for every kind of support with Afghanistan in the peace process and also in controlling the banking system through which terrorists are being funded.”
He said a UN monitoring team would find out how black money was turned white and drugs financed terrorists.
The delegation sough President Ghani’s views with regard to the peace agreement with the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan (HIA in order to take new and effective steps in light of them. (Pajhwok)
