KABUL - A conference on the Afghan peace process will be held in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad by a noted international organisation, a reliable source said on Sunday.
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning Pughwash Conference on Science and World Affairs -- dedicated to promoting peace -- will sponsor the conference next week, said a source invited to event.
Key faces from Pakistan and Afghanistan would attend the dialogue that would cover different angles of Afghan conflict and try to pave the way for talks between the warring parties, the prospective attendee revealed.
Former education minister Farooq Wardak, then commerce minister Anwar-ul-Haq Ahadi, Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhel, Haji Roohullah Wakeel, Khalilullah Safi and some other political figures will attend the conference.
The source said former Pakistani ambassador to Afghanistan Rostum Shah Momand, ex Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) director-general Assad Durrani, Aziz Khan and some other individuals would also take part in the event.
The source explained participants would not be representing their government. A joint committee of Afghan and Pakistani official may be constituted to work for Afghan peace during the conference.
Pughwash has previously organised constructive dialogue on the Afghan peace drive in France, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).(Pajhwok)
