KABUL - A source close to the Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah's office told TOLOnews on Sunday that the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders met with each other on Saturday and agreed to create a framework within the upcoming 15 days in order to end their rift.
Meanwhile, a number of rights activists said the NUG leaders have failed to lead the country and that they are concerned about the consequences of the tension between President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah.
"How is it possible to step forward towards the future in this complicated situation created by a two-headed government which is not legitimate according to the law and with the leaders that are losing opportunities for their own benefits," said Naeem Ayubzada, member of Afghanistan civil society networks.
"The people who voted for them [government leaders], did not expect an increasing insecurity, a poor economy, the rising number of drug addiction among the people and the fall of districts to militants," said Khalil Raufi, a civil society activist.
"It is clear that there is a poor leadership in the NUG. If the situation continues, we will face many obstacles, which will be more dangerous than the current situation," said Aziz Rafiee, CEO of Afghan Civil Society Forum.
According to reports, the issuance of the electronic national identity cards (e-NIC) is one of issues which have been delayed due to political rift between the NUG leaders.
Commenting on this, the interior ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediqi, said: "The Interior Ministry is ready to start the process and there is no obstacle in this respect. We also expect that the electronic national identity cards should be issued."
The president and the CEO's offices have not commented on the report so far. (Tolonews)
