KABUL - The Ministry of Interior (MoI) and Kabul police on Sunday announced no one was allowed to stage protest demonstrations or hold public gatherings in the capital over the next 10 days.
The decision comes after 80 people were killed and 231 others injured in two suicide attacks on a protest rally in on Saturday. The Islamic State (IS) or Daesh militant group claimed responsibility for the twin bombings.
A day of mourning is being observed today, with the national flag flying half-mast. President Ashraf Ghani, while denouncing the assault, has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A statement from MoIasked the people to cooperate with the government in protection of the public and maintaining order.
“The political leadership is responsible for enforcing the law and remains committed to the protection of people and their rights. We express condolences to the victims’ families and wish the injured speedy recovery,” the statement added.
Based on the fifth, sixth and 14th articles of the law on communities, strikes and protests, fifth and 10th articles of police law, and articles 2 and 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, protest demonstrations and gatherings are banned for the next 10 days,MoIsaid.
The government was trying to protect people’s rights and freedomsin line with the constitution and international conventions. All efforts had been made to protectthe rally, but the enemies remained adamant on massacring civilians, the ministry concluded.(Pajhwok)
