Taliban Capture Faryab Village after Overpowering Uprising Forces

MAIMANA - Public representatives on Friday said two uprising commanders had surrendered to the Taliban in the Pashtunkot district of northern Faryab province due to negligence by the government and security officials.
Faryab provincial council chief Mohammad Tahir Rahmani told Pajhwok Afghan News nearly 1500 Taliban gunmen attacked uprising forces in Thilan area of the Pashunkot district two days ago.
He said two uprising commanders --- Raz Mohammad and Raham Dil --- surrendered to the Taliban after two days of fighting and after running out of bullets.
Rahmani said despite the provincial government’s and the provincial council’s efforts, officials in Kabul and the Afghan National Army’s first battalion officials did not order airstrikes or other assistance and as a result, the two uprising commanders whose families had been held hostage by the insurgents surrendered.
The public representative said more than 3,000 families lived in Thilan area which he said was considered a strategic area. He warned if the government did not take action to rout Taliban and recapture Thilan area, then Sarhoz and all nearby areas would also be captured by the rebels.
ANA’s 209 Shaheen Military Corps first battalion commander in Faryab said government forces several times sent helicopters to the area yesterday in support of the uprising forces and shifted injured persons and equipment.
He said as per plan of the provincial administration, ground forces were sent to Sarhoz area and the forces were now at the frontline against the Taliban.
Meanwhile, a police official, who declined to be named, said Taliban had abducted families of Raz Mohammad and Raham Dil and had threatened to kill the hostages if the two did not surrender.
He said the two commanders spearheaded uprising groups comprising 60 fighters, but security forces did not reach to their aid.(Pajhwok)
