CPRD, CICD Being Merged, New Building Inaugurated

KABUL - Interior Minister Taj Mohammad Jahid and Democracy International director Mark Kryzer on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to merge the Central Population Registration Department (CPRD) and the Computerised Identity Card Department (CICD) and to bring about necessary reforms to the Traffic Police Department.
A US-funded building for the CPRD and CICD was also inaugurated by the home minister and was handed over to the authorities for use.
Jahid told reporters here that under the MoU, the Democracy International (DI) would help improve the capacity of traffic police, CPRD and CICD workers and would also cooperate in elimination of corruption with the Interior Ministry. He said funds for these projects would be provided by USAID.
So far CPRD and CICD have been working as independent institutions of the Interior Ministry and they work separately.
Jahid said the two institutions were being merged and they would work jointly in future. The new facility for the two institutions was inaugurated in the Police Township of Kabul today, he added.
CPRD Acting Director Humayon Muhtat said the building was constructed on three acres of land at a cost of $1.5 million provided by the US.
Earlier, the DI had also inked an agreement with Kabul municipality to digitalise the license issuance system of the department.(Pajhwok)
