CEO Renews Govt’s Commitment to Electoral Reforms

KABUL - Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Monday renewed the national unity government’s commitment to reforming Afghanistan’s election system.
Addressing a cabinet meeting here, the CEO said imperative of cleaning up the system should not be underestimated. It was a basic point of the agreement on government formation and a promise held out to the people.
“We have been facing legal hurdle to reform in the election system. Unfortunately, we are late discussing things that should have been discussed a year ago,” admitted the CEO.
He said discussions on finding a legal way to implement the election reforms were underway and hoped the process would soon yield a breakthrough.
Abdullah, however, expressed his concern that public trust over election was on the declined and everybody wished that election system should be reformed so that future polls would be held transparent
The process ran into a stalemate after the Wolesi Jirga -- or lower house of the parliament -- rejected the second presidential decree on election reforms.
The government has launched clandestine efforts to convince lawmakers into endorsing the legislative decree. Other legal ways of implementing the reforms are also being discussed.(Pajhwok)
