Iran, India, Afghanistan Ink Chabahar Agreement

TEHRAN - Tehran, New Delhi and Kabul signed an epoch-making agreement in Tehran on Monday to establish a transit and transportation corridor.
The agreement known as Chabahar Trilateral Agreement was signed by the three countries' officials in the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tehran on Monday.
The trilateral Chabahar agreement will considerably increase making use of Chabahar port that will connect India to Central Asia through Afghanistan and instead will provide Afghanistan's access to India via sea.
Earlier, President Rouhani in a joint press conference with the Indian prime minister underlined that boosting mutual cooperation between Tehran and New Delhi would serve not just the interests of the two nations, but other countries as well.
"The Iran-India relations have always been important and today such ties can benefit the two nations and the whole region," the Iranian president said.
He pointed to the Indian prime minister's visit to Iran, and said, "This visit is taking place in the post-sanction era and will prepare the ground for further economic cooperation between the two countries."
Modi, heading a high-ranking delegation, arrived in Tehran on Sunday evening and was officially welcomed by President Rouhani on Monday morning.
Modi is making a first trip to Iran since he took office in 2016, aimed at deepening energy ties. During the visit, India will sign a contract to build and operate the port of Chabahar on the Southern Iranian coast that is aimed at boosting connectivity with Afghanistan and central Asia. (FNA)
