KABUL - Some Wolesi Jirga or lower house members on Wednesday said the international community should support the Afghans in achieving peace and should not create hurdles for the Afghan peace process.
Lawmaker Obaidullah Barakzai from central Uruzgan province said Afghanistan was home to all Afghans and no one should create problems for the peace process.
He welcomed peace talks with the Gulbuddin Hikmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan, saying the group had so far presented no illegitimate condition for talks, asking colleagues to prevent individuals trying to derail the talks with the HIA.
“Peace is a national process and a need of Afghans, but the talks should be transparent, something the government should not deny,” Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said.
He said officials of the Foreign Ministry and the High Peace Council should be called to the Wolesi Jirga to update lawmakers on the peace process.
Another lawmaker, Mohammad Abbas Ibrahimzada, expressed concern over the bad security situation of the country and claimed distribution of weapons had been widely started in northern Balkh province. He warned if the government did not take urgent steps, the security situation would turn from bad to worst.
Ibrahimi also said he was concerned about the country’s security situation and said the Afghan government had not signed bilateral security agreements with the US and NATO for luxury, but based on the country’s needs.
Therefore, he said, the international community should think about Afghanistan’s current security situation and honestly support the Afghans in the fight against its enemies. (Pajhwok)
