Picks for Interior Minister, AG Referred to Wolesi Jirga for Trust Vote

KABUL - President Ashraf Ghani’s picks for the interior minister, attorney-general (AG) and Supreme Court member were introduced to the Wolesi Jirga for a vote of confidence on Monday.
Taj Mohammad Jahid, Mohammad Farid Hamidi and Mohammad Zaman Sangari have respectively been nominated for the interior minister, attorney-general and Supreme Court member.
Second Vice-President Mohammad Sarwar Danish,while introducing the three nominees, urged the lawmakers to give them a vote of confidence to ensure justice and security in the country.
The lower house would vote after reviewing documents of the nominees. On February 24, the president appointed Gen. Jahid as acting interior minister after Noorul Haq Ulumi resigned. Hamidi has been named acting AG.
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Ghulam Nabi Farahi told the Wolesi Jirga Hamidi had 15-year experience. He has received a bachelor’s degree criminal science from the Police Academy.
The AG-designate, a bachelor of political science from Kabul University, also holds a master’s in criminal law from Azad Islamic University and another degree in public administration from the Howard University.
Similarly, Lt. Gen. Jahid has 22 years military experience, having received his bachelor from the Military University. He previously served as 207th Zafar Military Corps commander in western Herat province.
Sangari has done his bachelor in Sharia Law from Kabul University. He has held high judicial positions, including investigation chief and head of anti-narcotics court.
Wolesi Jirga Speaker Abdur Rauf Ibrahimi asked the president to introduce nominees for other posts that are currently being held by acting officials.
The Ministry of Defence and the National Directorate of Security (NDS), the Afghan spy agency, have been under acting officials for a year and four months respectively. (Pajhwok)
