JALALABAD - Jabha-i-Milli Afghanistan leader Anwarul Haq Ahadi on Saturday said the government’s efforts at peace had failed to produce any result and called the peace process a “failure.”
Addressing hundreds of people at a party gathering in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, Ahadi said Pakistan had either no influence over the Taliban or it was not sincere in the Afghanistan reconciliation process.
“The Afghans were hoping for peace, but it has now appeared to us that Pakistan has no influence over Taliban to bring them to the negotiating table or the country is not sincere in its cooperation,” said Ahadi, a former minister.
The political opposition party leader said the unity government had failed to reserve the tide of insecurity amid its weakening leadership and political wrangling.
“Insecurity has increased in most of the provinces. The Islamic State (Daesh) is still active in Nangarhar, Helmand is on the brink of collapse. Our security forces have the ability to defend the country, but our political leadership is weak.”
Maulvi Qalamuddin, an ally of the opposition party and head of his own party Harkat-i-Intiqlab Afghanistan, also lashed out at the unity government over differences between its top leaders.
“The unity government leaders are in a tussle and as a result, top government posts remain vacant and economic and security problems have increased,” he said, claiming people had lost faith in the government.
“Don’t let the people lose faith in government because they will not participate in future elections.”
