MoIC Speaks About Challenges Facing Female Journalists

KABUL - Ministry of Information and Culture (MoCI) says discrimination, old customs and insecurity are the major hurdles facing female journalists in Afghanistan.
Addressing an event discussing the challenges facing female journalists, the deputy minister of information and culture Saeeda Mozhgan Mostafavi called women's presence symbolic in media.
"Better implementation of media regulations can also be a great achievement for women throughout the history of media in Afghanistan," she added.
Meanwhile, some other participants spoke about less presence of women in this sector - which is considered one of the main achievements made since the ouster of Taliban in 2001.
"In other parts of world, one-third of media employees are women but if we look at Afghanistan, we can see our presence is one-fifth," said Najiba Ayubi, deputy head of Afghanistan's National Journalists Union.
Tayeba Noori, who is one of the few female journalists working in southern Afghanistan, said female reporters in Kandahar were seeing plenty of hurdles on the way of their works.
"We receive death threats through letters and phone calls," Noori said, before adding that she had been personally threatened to death too.
"People stand on my way and ask me with threats to stay at home or I will be killed," she said. (Tolonews)
