Political Compromises Behind Govt’s Failure to Fight Corruption

KABUL - Anti-corruption organizations blame government for making political compromises in their fight against corruption.
The High Office of Anti-Corruption warned that political pressure and government's inability will pave the way for more widespread corruption.
Meanwhile, the Independent Joint Anti-Corruption Monitoring and Evaluation Committee said that efforts made by the NUG in the fight against corruption are not enough.
"Keeping widespread corruption in Afghanistan in mind, the efforts made by government are not enough," said Hamidullah Tawab, head of the committee.
Corruption in Kabul Bank, the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs and Smart City Housing Scheme are considered as major cases of corruption currently being dealt with by the Attorney General's Office (AGO).
The High Office of Anti-Corruption also lashed out at government for its inability to fight the scourge.
The Director of the High Office of Anti-Corruption, Said Ghulam Hussain Fakhri, believes that political compromises might be undermining government's fight against corruption.
"The delay in the formation of a cabinet, the delay in appointing governors and the fact that some organizations are still being led by caretakers, including the AGO and other organizations, have all led to mistrust between people and government employees and has weakened the fight against corruption," he said.
A number of cases of corruption are being investigated by the AGO, this despite the fact that the organization is still being led by a caretaker.
"One of the main hurdles in fighting corruption is that we don't have an attorney general," said Shahla Farid, a lecturer at Kabul University.
Meanwhile, Basir Azizi, spokesman for the AGO, said that the organization has completed investigations into the Kabul Bank case, the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs, the Pashtaney Bank and scores of other cases of corruption and has referred the cases to court. (Tolonews)
