Prof. Rabbani’s Death  Anniversary Observed

KABUL - The 4th death anniversary of former High Peace Council (HPC) chief Burhanuddin Rabbani was observed with the laying of a floral wreath on his grave in Kabul on Sunday.

Rabbani was assassinated at his residence in Wazir Akbar Khan along with three members of the peace panel by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary. He remained president from 1992 to 1996.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the Ministry of Interior alleged the suicide attacker was a Pakistani national and the assassination plot was hatched in Balochistan’s capital Quetta.

Rabbani’s son, Salahuddin Rabbani, President’s Special Representative for Reform and Good Governance Ahmad Zia Massoud, 2nd Vice-President Mohammad Sarwar Danish and acting defense minister Masoom Stanikzai attended the ceremony.

Rabbani’s family members, a number of senior government officials, HPC official and lawmakers also participated. A closed holiday, the day was observed in Kabul and several provinces.

The Council of Ministers has announced a countrywide holiday on September 20 to remember the former president. (Pajhwok)
