KABUL - Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, also son of ex-president Burhanuddin Rabbani, on Sunday called for a party-based election system. He also asked for investigations into serial killings.

While speaking on the fourth death anniversary of his father, the minister said peace and stability across the country had been his father’s desire. Rabbani always struggled for justice and freedom until his last breath, he added.

Also the High Peace Council (HPC) chief, Prof. Rabbani, was assassinated on September 20, 2011 at his residence in Wazir Akbar Khan along with three members of the peace panel by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban emissary. He remained president from 1992 to 1996.

“The aim of our presence in politics is to chase the goals and desires of our martyrs,” the foreign minister said, adding his party -- the Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan -- wanted a party-based electoral system in Afghanistan.

Salahuddin Rabbani said: “As long as political parties are not given a due role in the elections, the system would be not strengthened.” Giving parties a greater role and say in elections was a step toward real democracy, he observed.

The minister asked the security organs to investigate high-profile serial killings. “The security personnel are responsible for publishing the results of their investigations,” he concluded. (Pajhwok)
