Thousands of Helmand  Students Unable to Attend School

LASHKARGAH - Nearly 100,000 students have been unable to attend more than 100 schools where they are enrolled in southern Helmand province due to insecurity, officials say.

Education Director Abdul Matin Jafar told Pajhwok Afghan News on Monday that 107 schools had been closed due to insurgency across the province. The total member of government-run schools is 384 in Helmand.

The official said 192,000 students, including 51,000 girls, were being taught by over 3,000 teachers, including 564 female teachers, in the province.

According to Jafar, teachers of the closed schools had been transferred to operational schools in other areas and they received salaries through trusted individuals.

He said 172 schools in Helmand had buildings and construction work on buildings for another 31 schools was underway.

Provincial council member Mohammad Hussain Alizada said alleged corruption in procurement contracts of the education department.

He said the Ministry of Education (MoE) was responsible for corruption in the provincial education department. (Pajhwok)
