Inactive NGOs Being Closed: Minister

KABUL - Economy Minister Abdul Sattar Murad said on Thursday licenses of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in covert activities and performed weak would be cancelled.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News his ministry had recently started evaluating the performance of NGOs.

Of 1,900 NGOs registered with the Economy Ministry, some 200 to 300 have been operational in the country and activities of others are not visible.

The minister said the majority of NGOs were either inactive or they had not submitted reports about their activities to the ministry.

“We have decided to cancel licenses of inactive NGOs and a final decision in this regard will come after the scrutiny process is over.”

He did no name these NGOs, but said some foreign NGOs were among those involved in clandestine activities.

Murad said up to 50 percent of foreign aid came to Afghanistan through NGOs and his ministry would investigate where and how they spent their funds.

He said activities and spending of NGOs would be streamlined in order to alleviate poverty, fight drugs and improve public health sector and welfare activities.

The performance of registered NGOs is being scrutinised by the Ministry of Economy. Earlier some 200 licenses of NGOs were cancelled for their poor performance. (Pajhwok)
