WJ Summons Atmar to Brief MPs on Peace Bid

KABUL - The Wolesi Jirga (WJ) or -- lower house of parliament-- on Saturday decided to summon National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar to brief it on the latest peace initiative.

One of the points on the agenda for yesterdayday’s assembly secession was the government’s fresh contact with militants for the establishment of durable peace and stability in the country.

Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahim asked the government not to derail achievements of the last 13 years in the process of making peace with the Taliban. He said negotiations should ensure an end to decades of war in the country.

Ibrahim, who believed that peace talks should not be held secretly, assigned different commissions of the house to summon Atmar to brief lawmakers on fresh developments.

With the establishment of the unity government, peace expectations have seen a boost. President Ashraf Ghani has visited Pakistan and China to seek their support for result-oriented parleys with the Taliban.

Earlier, he Meshrano Jirga chairman had also opposed a situation where Taliban’s white flags were replaced by black ones of the Islamic States (Daesh) and Afghanistan once again became a victim of Pakistani intelligence conspiracies.

Last week, Abdul Hadi Muslimyar explained he wanted a peace process that preserved achievements of the past 13 years, respected martyrs, and promoted their mission. (Pajhwok)
