Taliban Think to Play Role by Attacks: NATO

KABUL - The NATO Secretary Gen. Jens Stoltenberg told TOLOnews that the Taliban by increasing their attacks in Kabul are trying to show to the London Conference their role they play in the country.

"Taliban are still able to conduct high-profile terrorist attacks, but they have much less capability to seize or control territory," Stoltenberg noted.

He added that this week is important for Afghanistan as the NATO foreign ministers meeting is taking place in Brussels and the upcoming London Conference on Afghanistan.

"... [The] London Conference which is important for mobilizing economic support for economic development of Afghanistan and that is the reason why the Taliban think to play [an] important role by high-profile attacks," insisting that the Afghan forces are ready and able to respond to such attacks.

A new NATO-led mission, called Resolute Support, is said to launch after the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. The mission is aimed to train, advice and assist the Afghan National Security Forces.

Based on the new NATO mission, the alliance troops would no longer take part in any combat against insurgents, but a small number of American troops are said to continue their combat mission on the war on terror in Afghanistan according to a recent announcement made by U.S. President Barack Obama.

"The NATO resolute mission is the mission where we are going to train, assist and advice and it is a non-combat mission," the NATO Secretary Gen. reiterated. "In addition, the United States has a counter terror mission in Afghanistan and I know there is a dialogue between the U.S. and Afghan forces on how they can work together."

This week is believed to be very important for Afghanistan where the foreign ministers of the NATO-member countries have come to Brussels, capital of Belgium, to discuss the future role of NATO in Afghanistan.

The Brussels meeting will be followed by another important meeting in London where the world leaders will get together to discuss their commitments to Afghanistan. (Tolonews)
