Ahmadzai Offers Militants Peace Parleys

KABUL - Afghans should unite for the sake of peace and preventing foreigners from bloodshed in the country, President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai said on Monday.

Speaking to a delegation of elders from southern provinces, he noted Kandahar remained one of the worst-hit provinces by terrorism and had lost a number of religious and community leaders.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Ahmadzai emphasised upon the Afghans to strive for their war-torn country’s reconstruction and prosperity. The goals could not be achieved without unity, he explained.

By the same token, security and economic strength would continue to elude Afghanistan in the absence of solid unity, Ahmadzai maintained, urging the Taliban and Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan to give up arms and join peace negotiations.

Elders from Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan provinces assured the president of their full support for his reform and development agenda. They hoped the new administration would prioritise public welfare. (Pajhwok)
