Candidates Reach Agreement on National Unity Deal

KABUL - Presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Abdullah Abdullah have agreed to the final terms of their national unity deal and are expected to sign it into the records sometime Saturday, sources close to the negotiations have said. The two candidates have been deadlocked in talks over the details of a power sharing framework they agreed to in early August after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry  polling sites, only 28 were found credible.

During the announcement live in Kabul, ECC Chief Abdul Sattar Saadat stated that many temporary IEC staff was involved in the electoral frauds during the runoff election.

“Our findings indicate that a majority of the frauds was committed by the IEC temporary staff. Some permanent staff members were also involved, directly and indirectly,” Saadat said.

The acting secretariat chief of the IEC, Ahmad Jawed Habibi, has confirmed the involvement of IEC staff in riggings, adding that the IEC will comment on ECC’s decisions soon.

“When we receive the final decision of the ECC, we have 24 hours to appeal,” IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor said. “If we do not have any complaints, we will proceed to announce the final election results.”

This is while some election monitoring institutions have called on the IEC to hold off on revealing the final results until the candidates reach an agreement.

“Our demand from the IEC is to announce the final results after the two electoral teams reach a political agreement,” head of the Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA), Mohammad Naeem Ayoubzada, stressed. (Tolonews)
