IEC Refuses to Give Date for Election Result

KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said the compilation of presidential election results would be completed by the end of the current week.

Both candidates would endorse a political agreement before the results were announced, the IEC spokesman hoped, refusing to give a specific date for unveiling the outcome.

Noor Mohammad Noor told a news conference that votes from 668 of 18,560 polling stations had been invalidated at seven public hearings. He said 4,260 checklists would be decided at the final public hearing this week.

So far 90 percent of the results had been compiled and 85 decisions of the IEC made public, Noor added. Overall 90 to 95 percent of the election process has been completed.

On the completion of technical process, the candidates will be given 24 hours to register their complaints. The Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) will address the address the objections within 48 hours.

The results would be announced after all complaints were addressed, Noor said, without giving the exact date. He asked the candidates to stay committed to the agreement they had endorsed in the presence of UN and US diplomats.

Noor hoped the candidates would reach a political agreement before the announcement of the election results. The 50-day full vote audit ended on Sept. 4, but the results are yet to be announced due to differences between the presidential runners.

Both candidates have agreed on forming a national unity government, but the Reforms and Unanimity team lead by Dr. Abdullah suspended talks due to differences over the role of the chief executive. (Pajhwok)
