New President Should Start Work in 15 Days: Karzai

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Thursday renewed his call for the inauguration of his successor within the next fortnight to end the current state of uncertainty.

Karzai stressed the early takeover by the new president at a meeting with university lecturers at the Presidential Palace in Kabul, a statement from his office said.

Kabul University lecturer Syed Bahadur Akbar commended the president for strengthening the higher education sector and providing housing facilities for teachers.

“Progress over the past 13 years has been possible due to your endeavors and good leadership as the first democratically elected president of Afghanistan,” he remarked.

About the election stalemate and its negative effects on the people, Karzai said the results would be made public as scheduled. The new head of state should assume office in the next 15 days, he added.

With regard to a recent political deal between the two presidential runners, Karzai said: “I hope the agreement will yield positive results and will prove to be in the interest of the people.”

While stressing consolidation of national unity, he urged all politicians to serve the interest of the masses and strengthen government departments.

Higher Education Minister Obaidullah Obaid, National Security Advisor Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta and Advisor on Academic Affairs Zalmai Hewadmal were also present on the occasion.

At the end, a letter of appreciation was delivered to Karzai on the basis of his meritorious services to the country.

Also on Thursday, the president reiterated the current situation had left a far-reaching negative impact on people’s lives, economy and security. He expressed the views at a meeting with Jon Kubbis, the UN’s secretary general’s special representative, and Jammes B. Cunningham, the US ambassador to Afghanistan.

Kubbis updated Karzai on the progress achieved so far in recounting the ballots. The president stressed the recount process should be completed by the end of the current month. (Pajhwok)
