Candidates Sign Joint Declaration

Candidates Sign Joint Declaration

KABUL - Presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai signed a declaration in commitment to the formation of a national unity government in the presence of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday.

The decree is half a page, with a brief pretext that stresses on three-points: respecting the Afghan constitution, formation of a national unity government and the audit process. Both candidates have signed off stating that they will jointly work on the details and structure of the national unity government in respect to the Afghan constitution.

Abdullah and Ghani-Ahmadzai have said that they are committed in the development of the national unity government, but Ghani-Ahmadzai highlighted that they have committed to "cooperation and unity", stressing that "a decree is a piece of paper if it is not embodied with trust."

Addressing the media, Abdullah said the two electoral teams are committed on the formation of a national unity government and that from now both candidates will focus on the national and social issues as well as the economic and security stability of the country.

"Today we have signed a declaration, which reflects the ideas of both electoral teams," Abdullah said, adding that all agreements will be based on the Afghan constitution that acts as "guideline" to detailing.

He said that this step was a step forward in strengthening the national unity of the country and bringing faith back for the future of the nation. Abdullah added that both teams will be working on the details and prospects of the national unity government, stressing that they are committed in the audit process as it will revive the credibility of the elections.

Elaborating on the essence of the national unity government, opponent Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai said that both camps are responsible for every citizen and that efforts must be made to accelerate the process.

"We must quicken efforts for peace restoration and security," Ghani-Ahmadzai said. "We are committed to accept the results and jointly work in the future."

He added that the auditing must be completed by the end of August to "pave the way for the transition of political power from on elected president to another."

"From now onward we should focus our discussions on the economy, the problems of the people and the security of the nation."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry emphasized that "one of these men is going to be president, but both are vital for Afghanistan's future."

Secretary Kerry stressed that he was here in Afghanistan to support the proposal and added that this is a situation for the Afghans to solve.

"I'm here to support them of their initiative and work through some of these difficult situations, but this is really an Afghan solution for an Afghan problem.

He underlined that the candidates reached an agreement themselves, while pointing at the two candidates at the conference.

"The agreement is a critical opportunity for both candidates to move beyond the campaign atmosphere. Both candidates have defined a road to a unity government. This is a major step. Both are transforming themselves into statesmen for the next government." (Tolonews)
