IEC to Announce Preliminary Results on Monday

KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday announced that the runoff preliminary results would be delayed for further investigations of 1,930 polling sites.

IEC was initially expected to announce the preliminary results on July 2. The commission stressed that the reason behind the delay is not pressure, it is to ensure transparency.

"Results were due today, but we have delayed the announcement to re-investigate 1,930 polling sites in 30 provinces; God willing, we will announce the results on Monday," IEC Chief Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani said. "The delay has not been made under any sort of pressure. It is only to ensure transparency."

Despite not being a political institution, the election commission has used political pragmatisms in the election process.

"If the crisis is settled through practicality, it is better that political pragmatisms are upheld," Nuristani added. "The point is to settle the crisis."

This comes at a time that presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah's campaign team has stalled all contacts with the election commission after accusing IEC officials of being involved in electoral fraud.

Furthermore, Abdullah's team has stated that they have not received any positive response in regard to the recommendations submitted to the commission on riggings.

IEC has stated that a possible meeting between the presidential candidates will be in the interests of the election process, calling on Abdullah to rejoin the election process. (Tolonews)
