NATO FM’s May Insist on BSA, SOFA Signing

KABUL - NATO foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss different issues, including the alliance’s future mission in Afghanistan.

“We will also discuss our future relationship with Afghanistan,” the NATO secretary-general said in his remarks prior to the meeting.

They would take additional steps in planning the new mission to train, advise and assist the Afghan forces from next year, he added.

At a meeting in the ISAF format, due in the afternoon, foreign ministers are expected to endorse the final operational plan for the Resolute Support Mission.

One NATO official told Pajhwok Afghan News that details such as the duration of the Resolute Support Mission and the number of troops would be discussed at a later stage.

The ministers would reconfirm their commitment to contributing to the collective financial effort for the long-tem sustainment of the Afghan forces, the official indicated.

“We expect the foreign ministers to reiterate the need for BSA and the SOFA to be signed as soon as possible, after the newly elected president is sworn in, in order to be in a position to launch Resolute Support Mission.”

Representatives from NATO and ISA countries, the UN and Afghanistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ershad Ahmadi are attending the meeting. (Pajhwok)
