MoI offer to Probe Amarkhel Rejected

KABUL - The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Sunday said the Independent Election Commission (IEC) had rejected its offer to investigate fraud allegations against its secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel.

In a brief statement, the ministry said IEC officials had refused to allow a MoI delegation to investigate the issue by saying that it was the responsibility of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).

Amarkhel has been accused of fraud during the June 14 runoff presidential election by the Kabul police chief. The police official has said Amarkhel wanted to dispatch a truckload of ballot papers to Kabul’s 21st municipality district and a polling centre in the Sarobi district.

But Amarkhel has rejected the allegations as baseless, saying ballot papers were being delivered to sites ran out of ballots.

IECC spokesman Nader Mohseni told reporters three complaints had been registered regarding the matter.

The complainants included Dr. Abdullah, Amarkhel and the people of Sarobi, said Mohseni, who added the issue was a complex one and would take some time to be resolved. (Pajhwok)
