Partial Results of Runoff Elections Delayed

Partial Results of Runoff Elections Delayed

KABUL - Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani, Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said at a press conference on Saturday that the announcement of partial results will be delayed because of unfinished conversation between Abdullah Abdullah and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

“Because discussions are still ongoing between UNAMA, Dr. Abdullah and the government of Afghanistan, we did not announce the partial results,” he said. “Whenever the issues are a bit clearer, results will be announced.”

Nuristani adds that the gathering process of votes is moving forward. Eighty percent of total votes from 32 provinces have been gathered and entered into the database of the commission.

He adds that result packages from 32 provinces have arrived to Kabul and the process of transfer will be completed on Sunday. Meanwhile, the IEC emphasizes that over seven million voted during the second round of elections.

“Now it’s clear to us that the estimate of the IEC regarding the number of votes was exact and over seven million people voted during the runoff,” Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, the IEC secretariat, said.

IEC said that the works of the commission is moving forward in the presence of national and international observers. (Tolonews)
